22a Gruppo Bossoni Brescia Art Marathon: the winners

Rain, but above all wind did not stop the almost 8,000 runners at the start.
In the marathon, Davide Angilella and Eva Grisoni from Brescia confirmed themselves as champions.
In the half marathon, victories went to Mattia Gianola and Sara Bottarelli.
In the BCC Brescia 10k the fastest are Pietro Cambianica and the 2022 marathon tricolor Giulia Sommi.

BRESCIA – Wind of passion. Even stronger than the one that blew, very strongly, on Brescia this morning. It is that of the almost 8,000 runners who nevertheless decided to be there and run the 22nd edition of the Gruppo Bossoni Brescia Art Marathon. Theirs was an exhilarating and indomitable passion, perfectly represented by the smiles with which they showed up in Piazza della Loggia to cross that finish line more longed for than ever.

Marathoners of the 42k and 21k, but also runners of the 10k, the competitive BCC Brescia 10k and the non-competitive Sportland Easy Run 10k, whatever their objective, they agreed: today was a challenge with the S capital letter, which has tempered and certainly given a lot: a lot of effort, but also a lot of pride.

Unfortunately, the wind, accompanied by rain, forced the organizers of the ASD Rosa Running Team to cancel the Family Walking.

«Today everyone won – declared Alessandro Cantoni, Councilor for Sport of the Municipality of Brescia –, this marathon has entered the hearts of many and today we had overwhelming proof of this. Congratulations for your passion and resilience.»

Also present was the Mayor, Laura Castelletti, who after the Mameli Hymn sung by the Brescian singer-songwriter Elodea kicked off the marathon and half marathon: «I saw many athletes warming up in the streets of the historic center before the start, it was really exciting . I am proud that our city’s marathon is the only marathon in the world to combine sport, charity and art.»

«I join in the compliments of the Sports Councilor and the Mayor towards all the runners, who have decided to color this edition too, as only they can do. Our thanks also go to all the volunteers on the route, who were able to withstand the wind and rain and support all the participants, even more today. They are our added value, still good”, the words of Loretta Pagliarini, head of the organizational team.

The Brescians Davide Angilella (Atletica Franciacorta Oxyburn) in 2:34’12” and Eva Grisoni (Atletica Paratico) in 2:58’59” confirmed themselves as king and queen of the BAM 42k. For him it is the second consecutive success, for her the third. In the BAM 21k the fastest were Mattia Gianola from Valtellina (Team Valtellina) in 1:11’38” and Sara Bottarelli from Brescia (FreeZone) in 1:16’17”, in the BCC Brescia 10k victory for Pietro Cambianica from Bergamo (Athletics Valle Brembana) in 33’02” and the Milanese, Italian marathon champion 2022, Giulia Sommi (CUS Pro Patria Milano) in 37’18”.

BAM 42K, MARATHON – For her it was a trio, for him an encore: Eva Grisoni is increasingly the undisputed queen of the BAM. No one before her has ever managed to win the Brescia marathon three times. Three consecutive victories, among other things: in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Today his time was 2:58’59”. The athlete from Brescia of Atletica Paratico, who ranges from road races to mountain races and triathlons, commented on her third success as follows: «This, among the three, was the most difficult and therefore also the most beautiful. The wind? An energy sucker. I thank an athlete, or rather an angel, unfortunately I don’t know his name, who helped me a lot especially on a mental level. I dedicate this first place to the volunteers on the route, without them we couldn’t write these beautiful sports pages.”

Francesca Ferraro (Emozioni Sport Team) toasted second place in 3:10’53”, Chiara Bonassi (Atletica Paratico) third in 3:18’08”.

Davide Angilella, from Atletica Franciacorta Oxyburn from Brescia, repeated last year’s victory by crossing the finish line in 2:34’12”, ahead of Luca Girelli (Atletica Falegnameria Guerrini), in his second marathon, who finished in 2:36 ’32”, and the triathlete Mattia Ceccarelli (Polisportiva Losa), third in 2:38’23” and who decided to test his fitness on the streets of Brescia in preparation for the IRONMAN Texas on April 27th.

«I’m very excited – began Davide Angilella –, after the 35th km it was literally brutal. A very strong, contrary wind was blowing, which did not allow us to advance. I ran the first 13 km with the half marathon athletes, then I continued alone.»

BAM 21K, HALF MARATHON – Among the men to sign the half marathon was Mattia Gianola (Team Valtellina) in 1:11’38”. Luca Boninsegna (Sportclub Merano), a mountain running athlete making his distance debut, finished in second and third place respectively on the finish line in 1:13’18” and Matteo Tengattini (Atletica Paratico) in 1:14’27 ”.

«It was my first time in Brescia, so it couldn’t have gone better than this. Too bad about the wind, although I won’t deny that I also had fun, it’s a beautiful race, I’ll be back. In some sections it was impossible to keep the pace, at a certain point I no longer looked at the stopwatch, the only thing that mattered to me was winning”, said Mattia Gianola from Valtellina.

In the women’s field, the Italian mountain runner Sara Bottarelli, from Gardone Valtrompia in Brescia and registered for the FreeZone, with a time of 1:16’17” got the better of Alessia Scaini (AS Valchiese), second in 1:21 ’18”, and Andrea Schweigkofler (Sportclub Merano), third in 1:21’22”.

«Congratulations to all the athletes who decided to leave this morning, it’s not for everyone. I saw many kids in wheelchairs accompanied by pushers, they gave me very strong emotions. I have never found myself racing in these weather conditions, mountain running is practiced in the summer. I dedicate this race to my team, today there were 60 of us at the start” said Sara Bottarelli, who won the 10k last year.

The ultramarathon champion Giorgio Calcaterra finished his effort in 1:21’22”.

BBC BRESCIA 10K – They were the ones who inaugurated the finish line in Piazza della Loggia: Pietro Cambianica (Atl. Valle Brembana) and Giulia Sommi (CUS Pro Patria Milano), who thus won the BCC Brescia 10k. In the men’s field, behind the Bergamo native, who finished his race in 33’02”, four athletes fought for the other two positions on the podium, defined by… hundredths. Stefano Goffi (Polisportiva GB Vighenzi) came second, Riccardo Marino (CTL 3 Atletica) third and Michele Massetti (Libertas Vallesabbia) fourth, all with an official time of 33’06”.

«Nice race, very tough, too bad it was too windy – declared Pietro Cambianica –, the route is lively, stimulating. At the beginning we proceeded as a group, then I tried to gain precious metres, luckily in the second part the wind was in favour.»

Giulia Sommi, 2022 Italian marathon champion, stopped the clock at 37’18”, ahead of Cristina Cotelli (Atletica Paratico), second in 38’25”, and Alessia Brambilla, her teammate and third in 38’31” : «I am happy, first of all, to have completed this race. It was excellent training in view of the Reggio Emilia half marathon next Sunday. The marathon? Maybe one at the end of April, I haven’t decided yet.”

22 TIMES PRESENT – Nicola Federici, representative of Atletica Rodengo Saiano Mico, is the only marathon runner to have run all twenty-two editions of the BAM. Today he crossed the finish line after 3:10’29”: «My goal was to stay under three hours, but with this wind I’m quite satisfied. And speaking of the wind, we should always remember that when it is in favor it is a friend, because it literally makes you fly, when it is against it it is still a friend because it trains. And today, for me, but I think for everyone, was great training.”

2024 EDITION: IT’S NOT OVER YET – An evening all for them, for those who won the overall and category podium of the 22nd Brescia Art Marathon. It will be held at Palazzo Loggia and the date will be defined in the next few days. In fact, bad weather did not allow the winners to get onto the podium at the end of today’s competition.
